This is a blog that follows his journey of recovery and healing.Mollyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09190041072093423246noreply@blogger.comBlogger188125tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6064332100864040461.post-13682894001318303842012-10-16T06:40:00.001-07:002012-10-16T07:29:31.003-07:00Lady GagaWhen Zavier was little, he had a lot of sound sensitivity, and would cover his ears. We spent time trying to encourage him to take his hands away, and I avoided loud places. For example, if we tried out a church whose music was too loud, it was crossed off the list.

Zavier now likes to listen to modern music - Lady Gaga, Rihanna, etc. He's currently on his laptop playing games while listening to Poker Face. I know some parents are probably tired of asking their children to turn
their music down. But every time I say the phrase: "Zavier, turn your
music down!" - I smile.

He doesn't like Alex Clare's "Too Close" song at all though. If it comes on in the car, he covers his ears and looks disgusted.
K: Oh, the Avengers
Me: Abby, what about you?
A: I'm thinking about toys
Me: Zavier, what are you thinking about?
Zavier: DVD guide
Me: Oh, you're thinking about a dvd guide?
Zavier: Yes
Me: Oh, ok. Did your dvd come with one?
Zavier: No
Me: Oh, does that make you feel happy or mad?
Zavier: Mad
Me: Oh.Mollyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09190041072093423246noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6064332100864040461.post-50982506101842989442012-08-13T11:29:00.001-07:002012-08-13T11:36:33.721-07:00Summer Recap-We drove 2500 miles cross country for a move. Zavier did great. He & sisters watched all 100 episodes of SpongeBob, ate a lot of burgers n fries, slept well in hotel rooms, was cooperative and helpful (he buckles his sister), and convinced me to buy him a lot of dvds at various stores across the country. Here's a sample conversation:

Zavier: 3 dvds. Mommy can I have 3 dvds?
Me: Uh...I don't know. Which ones do you want?
Zavier (very fast): Whale of a Birthday, Spy Buddies, Atlantis Squarepantis
Me: Hmm...how about one.
Zavier: No...how about three.
Me: Ok they are on sale, so I'll get two.
Zavier: How about no. How about three.
Me: Ok three. But next time, you are just getting one.
Zavier: (Smiles).

-We arrived at our new home. Zavier enjoyed swimming in the pool, going to the beach, children's museum, aquarium, etc. He did well at restaurants, but all he wants is a plain burger patty, fries, and cranberry juice. I can get him to eat a few more things at home, but when we go out, it's all he wants. He sits there quietly, sometimes plays with my phone, and answers my questions. It was noisy for him at first when we started to eat at the bowling alley, but then he got used to it. It definitely helped him prep for a meal at a place similar to Rainforest Cafe (super sensory overload potential but did well).

-We drove another 3600 miles to visit family (round-trip). We went to the beach, walks, playgrounds, play dates, etc. His fav thing to do was hang out in the air conditioning, and have his grandpa cook him burgers and play with electronics (like his phone). My grandma passed away, and he wore a suit to the funeral, then went to a large family meal at a restaurant afterwards. He got a lot of compliments for his good behavior.

-We are now back at another new home, and he's still doing well in terms of behavior, sleeping, eating, sleeping, still potty trained, etc. Yesterday we went to a water park and he liked laying on tube in the lazy river. He agreed to go down a water slide, but the lifeguard forgot to get him at the bottom, so he didn't really want to go back (he can't swim. We've tried, still a work in progress). He agreed to go again down the slide, but about 15 feet down, decided to stop and try to turn around. I went down, grabbed him along the way, and slid down with him. That was it for slides.

-His current fav activity is to act out scenes from his fav YouTube videos where they identify, in detail, the info on a dvd case and dvd. He memorizes entire scripts, and then acts them out, and tries to get me to act them out too (using dvds and cases). Example: "...unfortunately there's no dvd guide...here's the disc..."
Or the family about to be evicted from their home who then wins the lotto. But today Zavier had an amazing day at a really hot, humid, and sensory overload amusement park, and his behavior was really nothing short of a miracle. To summarize, he went climbing with his sisters in a massive, high ropes climbing structure.... he followed directions in a large bounce area... he went on several rides with no issues. He went on a ride without me, twice! (Abby took him). He attended a 30 min technicolor, rock-music-blaring, laser lights, theater production. He sat calmly, paid attention, and clapped at the end of each performance with everyone else. At min 25, when I realized he was really going to make it, I started to cry. I had to distract myself to think of something else to keep myself from sobbing - it was that much of a relief. My sensory averse child had a blast in the worst of conditions. I'm so proud of him, because I know he worked hard. And I'm so thankful to God for the blessing of this day.

With autism, life is a series of moments. Some are good, and some are... not so good. I'm soooo appreciative that we had today.Mollyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09190041072093423246noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6064332100864040461.post-456182818523951992012-05-26T21:42:00.001-07:002012-05-26T21:42:05.902-07:00Me: "Zavier, what do you want to do for your birthday tomorrow?"
Zavier: "Balloons, dvd presents, burger/fries, and Happy Birthday Zavier song. Happy Birthday to you, Happy Birthday to you..."
Me: "Happy Birthday dear Zavier, Happy Birthday to you. That one?"
Zavier: "Yes."
Me: "So how old are you now?"
Zavier: "I'm 7 years old."
Me: "Yeah, so then when you have your birthday, how old will you be?"
Zavier: "8"
Me: "Yup. So are you happy about turning 8?"
Zavier: "No."
Me: "I don't like getting older either. But you're happy about the party and presents, right?"
Zavier: "Yes."
Me: "Hey Zavier, what did we do today?"
Zavier: "First, went to park."
Me: "Yup. And then?"
I got a very sweet hug from him. There was a comical moment when I was discussing with Abby our plans for the day in the kitchen, and Zavier responded from the other room.

Me: "So today we'll go to Trader Joe's?"
Abby: "Sure!"
Zavier: "No thanks!" (yelled from other room).Mollyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09190041072093423246noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6064332100864040461.post-13923327573174903312012-05-08T22:36:00.002-07:002012-05-08T22:43:48.886-07:00I asked Zavier to select some movies for his birthday. Later on, he showed me very quickly - he had saved each one on an internet tab. He rattled off the names from memory, and then closed out of the entire thing.

Me: "Hey! How will I remember all that? You'll have to show me again tomorrow. I don't have your memory, Zavier. I don't think anyone does - you're really smart."

Zavier: "Yes."
He did really well. He listened to her instructions on where to sit, and how to pose. Towards the end, as he sat on some steps, he imitated my hand movements as I gave him different ideas (ie: hands on face, fists on chin, hands on knees, etc). It was really cute and sweet.
Here are the final pics! We love it! Thank you to BrandiT Photography: http://www.branditphotography.com/
It's time for bed. I'll be right back."
When I returned, he had already put his laptop away.
Me: "Good job buddy, putting your laptop away. That's great. What's this?"
Zavier: "It's a toothbrush."
Me: "Yup, so what does that mean?"
Zavier: "Brush teeth."
Me: "Yup. Do you want to do it, or do you want Mommy to help?"
Zavier: "I do it."
Me: "Ok, here." I talk to him while he brushes his teeth. "Ok so now it's time for prayer. Do you want to say it?"
Zavier: "Yes. Now I lay me down to sleep. I pray the Lord my soul to keep. To angels watch me through night. Til I wake morning light. Please God bless Mommy Daddy everyone who loves me. Bestest Zavier whole wide world. Amen."
Me: "Ok good job. Can I give you kisses?"
Zavier: "Yes. Ten kisses."
Me: "Ok, where can I kiss you? On the forehead, cheek, or nose...?"
Zavier: "On the cheek."
Me: "Ok, left or right?"
Zavier: "Right cheek." (Turns his face so I can kiss the right side).
Me: "Ok let's talk about Zavier. Zavier is...let's say 10 things."
Zavier: "Cute, smart, sweet, kind, cute, smart, sweet..."
Me: "Ok, you are saying some of them twice. How about cute, smart, sweet, kind, brave..."
Zavier: "Funny, good reader, an' little bit silly."
Me: "Ok sounds good. Love you."
Zavier: "I wuv you."
Me: "Good night."
Zavier: silence
Me: "Um, Zavier?"
Zavier: "G'night."Mollyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09190041072093423246noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6064332100864040461.post-78370781240315397222012-03-16T12:00:00.000-07:002012-03-16T12:00:56.822-07:00PhotosZavier's new favorite side hobby is taking photos with his phone (it's his dad's old phone that now works as an iTouch). He saves them and then rotates which one gets to serve as his wallpaper.

His dad worked as a military combat photographer, and is really good at it, so Zavier's interest is really sweet.

His subjects are interesting though. Rather than shooting people, he does more abstract work. The latest was a close-up of the bathroom sink with the water running. It reminded me that I need to clean the faucet. Hopefully when he's older, he doesn't load all the photos to i-Cloud and share them on Facebook. Although probably by then, you'll be able to take those photos and create your own personal book available for sale on amazon. He would probably title it: "Mommy Has a Messy House."Mollyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09190041072093423246noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6064332100864040461.post-79557243216179127162012-03-13T08:03:00.001-07:002012-03-13T08:04:20.982-07:00YouTubeZavier loves to watch YouTube. His fav clips are people demonstrating what their dvds and cases look like; silly songs; old Nick Jr promo segments; and cartoon clips. He likes to watch it on his "phone" (iTouch) and laptop. He also likes to watch short clips of movies/cartoons (a few minutes in length) on Abby's portable dvd player. On his ideal planet, he has all 3 of them going at once, maybe with our flatscreen tv too, reclined on the leather sofa with his blanket and some chips. Yup, that's Zavier's ideal moment in a nutshell.

Anyway, yesterday he lost his laptop for a week because he removed a few of the keys. I sat down with him and explained it to him while holding the laptop and the calendar:

"First, you took off laptop keys. Then, no laptop for one week. Today is Monday, March 12, 2012. You can have laptop on Monday, March 19, 2012. No taking off laptop keys."

He understood, but didn't look that sad, and I couldn't figure out why. I brought the laptop to my room. By the time I came back out, he was already watching YouTube on the big tv. He had figured out how to reach it using the remote, and it was that fast. He was already watching cartoon clips, and jumping around in complete glee.

Me: "Zavier, where are we going?"
Zavier: "To Daddy's work."
Me: "Yup, why are we going there?"
Zavier: "to bring dinner."
Me: "Yes. Ok so first Daddy's work, then what?"
Zavier: "Go to...(thinks about it)...Zavier's house."
Me: "Ok. So first Daddy's work, then Zavier's house."
Zavier: "Yes."
Me: "What are you gonna do at Zavier's house?"
Zavier: (thinks about it): "Play computer, play phone, eat chips, drink juice, watch Nick Jr."
Me: "Great job. Ok I like your ideas."

I'm surprised he didn't try to include eating a Popsicle, since he loves them. :)Mollyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09190041072093423246noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6064332100864040461.post-81910401367125934972012-03-02T16:31:00.002-08:002012-03-02T16:32:52.437-08:00SpontaneousI don't usually "spring" things on him. Usually we have a consistent and clear plan for the day. But sometimes life happens, and I want him to be able to adjust well. So every once in a while, we add some things that weren't originally planned.

Me: "Hey Zavier? How about we go see Miss Kristin?"
Zavier: "Yes."
Me: "After Miss Kristin, what do you want to do next?"
Zavier: "Go to Zavier's house."
Me: "Ok."

After meeting with Kristin...

Me: "Hey Zavier? Can we go to see Mr Jeff? I have to turn in your homework to him. How about first Mr Jeff, then burger and fries?"
Zavier: "No Mr Jeff."
Me: "Please? You can play with my phone."
Zavier: "Yes."

After meeting with Mr Jeff, then getting the food...

Me: "Hey Zavier? How about we get your hair cut?"
Zavier: "How about no."
Me: "You can play with my phone. No buzzing, just scissors. Mommy will be there."
Zavier: "Yes."
Me: "Ok thanks."

After the haircut, which went great, we went home.Mollyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09190041072093423246noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6064332100864040461.post-22718647179692320192012-02-17T20:41:00.000-08:002012-02-17T20:41:59.971-08:00TricksZavier: "Mommy, can I have phone?"
Me: "Yeah ok. Only if you don't look at YouTube. It uses up my data. So what do you want to use on the phone?"
Zavier: "Amazon.com."
Me: "Oh, are you going to look at dvds?"
Zavier: "Yes."

So I gave him the phone. Two seconds later, I hear "hee hee hee hee."

He's on YouTube.

The next day...
Zavier: "Mommy, can I have the phone?"
Me: "It depends, what do you want to do on it?"
Zavier: "Amazon.com."
Me: "I don't think I'm falling for that again. You're going to use YouTube again, aren't you?"
Zavier: "Yes! ha ha ha..."Mollyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09190041072093423246noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6064332100864040461.post-66834985510573863262012-02-10T18:15:00.000-08:002012-02-10T18:20:08.895-08:00ConversationZavier: "Two Curious George dvds."
Me: "Oh really? Which ones?"
Zavier: "Amazon.com."
Me: "Ok." (went to amazon)
Zavier: "Type 'Curious George dvds.'"
Me: "Ok, look, I did. Now which ones?"
Zavier: "Curious George, Widescreen Edition. Curious George, A Very Monkey Christmas."
Me: "I see it. How about something cheaper? Curious George Makes New Friends?"
Zavier: "No. Curious George, Widescreen Edition. Curious George, A Very Monkey Christmas."
Me: "Ok. I'll put them on the wish list."
Zavier: "No, add to cart."
Me: "No, they are expensive. I put them on the wish list."

Zavier then played with his phone, and took a bath. I spent some time finding cheaper Curious George movies.

Me: "Hey Zavier, I found some cheaper Curious George movies. Want to see? How about first get dressed, then see it?"
Zavier: "No, first amazon.com."
Me: "Ok. Look, I found 3 movies. They are on sale. They are: Curious George Makes New Friends, Curious George Sweet Dreams, and Curious George Goes to a Birthday Party. Do you want the 3 of them?"
Zavier: Pauses, studies them, then says: "Five Curious George dvds."
Me: "Oh." (laughing). "You want all five?"
Zavier: "Yes."
Me: "Uhhhh, ok I guess. Go tell Uncle Eek."
Zavier: (to Uncle Eek, from memory): "Uncle Eek, can I have Curious George dvds. I want Curious George Makes New Friends, Curious George Sweet Dreams, Curious George Goes to a Birthday Party, Curious George Widescreen Edition, Curious George A Very Monkey Christmas."

So since he has me wrapped around his little finger, I ordered all of them ;).Mollyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09190041072093423246noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6064332100864040461.post-24050877016910644232012-01-05T06:49:00.000-08:002012-01-05T06:50:03.101-08:00XBox KinectIn December 2010, my parents generously gave us a new XBox 360 Kinect for Christmas. It was for the family to enjoy, but they also had Zavier in mind, because it was reported in the news that other children with autism liked Kinect (it's similar to the Wii, except you don't need to hold anything in your hands when you play).

The family loved it. Well, except Zavier. He wasn't really interested in even watching them play...until now, about one year later. We found a game called Just Dance Kids 2, and since it has songs on it that he loves, he will sit and watch it. Then the other day something really cool happened: Zavier stood up and agreed to play beside his dad. And the two of them danced to Head Shoulders Knees and Toes, and some other songs that Zavier selected. It was a really beautiful moment. I wanted to stay to watch, but I had to pick up Abby at preschool, so I just left the house smiling.Mollyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09190041072093423246noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6064332100864040461.post-39847578345998357192012-01-01T09:07:00.000-08:002012-01-01T09:07:16.724-08:00Happy New YearSome of Zavier's accomplishments for 2011:
He did. He came up to me and complained: "December? No. It's November."Mollyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09190041072093423246noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6064332100864040461.post-63039455026272471162011-10-16T22:34:00.000-07:002011-10-16T22:34:23.299-07:00FootballZavier has been getting better at catching and throwing the football lately. He even took it to bed with him (usually he likes to hold his dvds while he falls asleep).Mollyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09190041072093423246noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6064332100864040461.post-52021623183804231912011-09-22T22:20:00.000-07:002011-09-22T22:20:57.109-07:00Blues CluesTonight Zavier answered every single question that Steve asked on Blues Clues (tv). It was really cool.Mollyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09190041072093423246noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6064332100864040461.post-32744460792506287242011-09-22T22:18:00.000-07:002011-09-22T22:18:14.763-07:00Cute quoteI invited Zavier to join Kyrsten & I on the sofa. We had both recliners out, so he was going to have to climb over. I didn't say that though. I just said: "Hey Zavier, want to join us on the sofa?" He decided to comment on it using a quote he got from somewhere. With perfect eye contact, he said to me: "Oh say, it's your child. Climb on over."

I smiled back and said, "yes child, climb on over."
